Italien Flagge   Palermo    Italien Flagge

To escape our long winter, we flew to Palermo for 5 days and had a pretty nice weather with white-blue sky and mild temperatures, best conditions for a city trip with a short step to Mondello, the city beach of Palermo.

Palermo is the capital and fifth largest city in Italy and the political and cultural center of Sicily. With almost 700,000 inhabitants Palermo is quite manageable. Because of its proximity to Africa, there is a colorful mixture of cultures in the city, which also shows itself in the markets, oriental, italian, african, everything is offered here for sale. Equally diverse is the architecture of the magnificent buildings, Arabs, Normans, Staufer have left their mark. Everything is represented from gothic to baroque. Add to that the leisurely Sicilian flair, we enjoyed it all very much.

One of the most important sights in Palermo is the magnificent cathedral. The church shows a variety of architectural styles and was in contrast to the other churches surprisingly simple inside. We climbed up to the roof and had a wonderful view of the city from the top.

Our hotel was very centrally located, right in the old town and so we were able to reach all major attractions, which are also pretty close to each other, within walking distance. It is great that there are so many pedestrian areas in the old town and the sidewalks are very wide, so that you can easily walk and view all the many small, old shops, bars and small food stores.

Palermo is also a very green city, in addition to the very worth seeing botanical garden, there are still enough beautiful parks and green areas, which were all very well kept and clean.

Of course, a visit to the largest and most famous market, the Mercato Ballaro was not missing, the daily market is an unforgettable experience. Tasty fruits, vegetables, freshly caught fish, seafood, meat, innards are offered here. Most of the food, you can enjoye all also as street food. The atmosphere is loud and passionate and so different from the markets we knew before.

We walked all over the old town and were often surprised that we came from one attraction to another. The trails are really short and the atmosphere on the streets and squares was super relaxed and multi-cultural.

In the evening it was unfortunately still too cold, but for a drink on the roof terrace of our hotel it was o.k.

Palermo really surprised us, we did not think that it was such a versatile, beautiful and pretty nice city. For a short break at any time, we can recommended it as well.
