Santorini is probably of its cratered landscape
scenery the most spectacular island of the Aegean, because the island is an
extinct volcano. The volcano rocks reach up to 360 m from the sea. If you arrive
by ship, you have a breathless view of the town above the volcano rocks. Like
swallow’s nests the white houses stick at the rock and shining bright in the
sun.
We lived in Finikia, a small village at the
northeast coast. In the narrow and steep lanes of the village there is no
traffic by car possible. The transport of our luggage to the apartment was done
with a donkey.
The island fascinated us very well with its mostly
black lava sandy beaches on the eastern side, or the small nice rock bays in the
south and the west. You can reach them only by steepest stairs.
But here is also mass tourism at its best. Whether
in Thira or Oia, some busses with tourist "celebrate" the sunset every
day in one of the many cafes and restaurants with the view of the caldera by
classical music.
Santorini is worth seeing in any case. But our short
stay of 4 days was enough for us to explore the island.
