Sukhothai

Despite our many visits to Thailand, we have never been in Sukhothai, the cradle of Thailand.
The Sukhothai Historical Park includes the ruins of Sukhothai, the capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th
and 14th Century. Inside and outside the old city walls there are almost 200 temple ruins to see, the oldest is dated from the 13th Century. The inner area includes approximately 2 x 1.6 kilometres.
We droved from Chiang Mai, with our rental car through beautiful country sides, with long avenues, lush green rice fields, high mountain trails at first to  Old Si Satchanalai and from there to Sukhothai.

Old Si Satchanalai belongs to the Sukhothai Historical Park and is a wonderful ruins area, surrounded by a huge park, just a few kilometres from Sukhothai. Here we have got a first view of the great Sukhothai Historical Park. We were quite enthusiastic about the old walls here.

We stayed just 1 km from the Historical Park in a beautiful hotel. From here we went by bike and comfortable 36 degrees and sunshine to the historical park. It was so wonderful and our cameras were running hot and no other tourists have been there at this time.

We're always absolutely fans of ruins (probably reflecting the age), but also the whole vegetation here in this huge park was fantastic. In the many ditches there were many Lotus flowers in all colours and sizes, trees with big crowns and hundreds of butterflies. We can recommend everyone to come here, it's just great!

We also visited New Sukhothai which is 12 km far from Old Sukhothai. The town itself is not really worth seeing despite to the market, but markets are always fascinating.
